OVER THE WAVES takes the reader effortlessly back to the year 1914, to a quiet time before World War I begins. Twelve-year-old Joel Peterson and his mother have traveled from Omaha to visit his grandparents in Sweden. Joel's biggest worry is that his mother won't want to leave and return home. When news of the war breaks, most ship travel is cancelled and they're not sure they'll be able to get back to America. Joel learns and experiences much that summer: the feelings of a first love, how to handle difficult situations and what he wants to do with his life.
